Abraham Lincoln, the Railroad Lawyer

In 1851 Lincoln represented Alton & Sangamon Railroad. This case established Lincoln as one of the most prominent practitioners of railroad law in the state of Illinois.

Abraham Lincoln Law Career

Abraham Lincoln was a self taught lawyer. In September 1836 he was admitted to the bar, allowing him to practice law in Illinois. His first law firm was Stuart and Lincoln. He was well known for his honesty, people called him “Honest Old Abe”.

Children

Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln had four sons, all were born in Springfield, Illinois. Robert was the couple’s first child and the only one who lived to adulthood.

Marriage to Mary Todd

Mary Todd and Abraham Lincoln married on November 4, 1842. She was 23 and he was 33. The wedding ceremony was presided by Episcopal minister Charles Dresser.

Early Adulthood

Lincoln left his family home when he turned 21. He took odd jobs navigating the Sangamon River, as store manager, entrepreneur, postmaster and land surveyor.

Parents

Abraham Lincoln came from a working family. His mother was Nancy Hanks, believed to be an illegitimate daughter of Lucy Hanks and a Virginia planter. His father was Thomas Lincoln, seventh generation of Lincolns in America.

Early Life

Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a one-room log cabin in Sinking Spring Farm.
